Don't Bite the Messenger - Regan Summers
I'm not a fan of vampire novels - always excepting the vampires in Patricia Briggs' werewolf stories! But I'm glad I made an exception and read "Don't Bite the Messenger".

In wandering around the net I've heard grumbles about the passivity or even victim status of women in vampire novels. They are "rescued" by abusive men aka the vampires.

"Don't Bite the Messenger" kicks that trope over and stomps on it. The heroine has suffered abuse ... and survived it, remade herself, triumphed. The strong heroine and strong narrative voice made this story--and the hero was pretty awesome, too. Excellent world building (a tough gig in a novella) rounded out my enjoyment.
