Keeper of the King's Secrets - Michelle Diener
Michelle Diener set the bar high in her debut book, In a Treacherous Court This time we're not getting to know Susanna and John. They're involved and the romance is less the journey to love than the journey of adjusting to what loving one another means -- in this case, with John being who he is, that means lots of danger!

The historical setting is brought vividly to life. The characters feel modern enough to understand their sensibilities, yet the court intrigue is there, shaping everything.

A really accessible historical novel which to me means the author knows her research material, has digested it, and lets her readers simply play in the result. All the work's been done. Just enjoy.
